OpenAI has released Sora 2, its upgraded AI video generator, and introduced a new social media app called Sora that focuses entirely on AI-created short videos.

Sora 2 brings improved realism, sound synchronization, and better control over video generation. Users can now create short vertical videos up to 10 seconds long, complete with background audio and speech. The technology powers the newly launched Sora app, which adopts a TikTok-style interface where every clip is AI-generated.

OpenAI says the app includes strict safeguards. Users must verify their identity before using their likeness in generated content, and others cannot create videos of them without permission. A “cameo” feature allows consenting users to insert realistic avatars of themselves into videos. Public figures are excluded unless they opt in.

The app also takes a controversial approach to copyright: content from movies, shows, and other media is included by default unless rights holders opt out. Disney has already removed its content, and legal debates around AI and intellectual property are expected to intensify.

Currently, the Sora app is invite-only, available in the U.S. and Canada on iOS, with broader rollout expected in the coming months.

OpenAI’s move positions it directly against platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts — but with a major twist: every video is generated by AI.
