Google services faced widespread disruptions across multiple US cities on Wednesday, leaving thousands of users unable to access essential tools like Search, Gmail, and YouTube.
According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, reports of disruptions began to spike in the early hours, peaking with tens of thousands of complaints. The majority of issues were reported in major metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.
Users took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice their frustration, with many reporting that the outage affected not only personal browsing but also critical work functions. Some businesses relying on Google Workspace tools like Docs, Meet, and Drive experienced delays and interruptions.
Google has acknowledged the outage but has not yet provided details on the cause. In a brief statement, the company said, “We are aware of the issue affecting some of our services and are working quickly to resolve it.”
By late afternoon, services had started to gradually restore for many users, though intermittent disruptions continued in some regions.
This is not the first time Google has faced such large-scale service disruptions. A similar outage in December 2020 left millions without access to Gmail and YouTube for hours, highlighting the world’s reliance on the tech giant’s platforms.
